Almuric 2

  1. ALMURIC 2 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in my art folio, "Almuric," based on the novel by Robert E. Howard.

This drawing illustrates the last sentence in the following scene from the novel, ALMURIC:

"All this time my rage had been growing until the chamber seemed to
swim in a red mist. Wheeling, I gripped the chain with both hands, wrapping it around my wrists for more leverage. Then, bracing my feet against the floor and wall I began to strain with all my strength. All over my body the great muscles coiled and knotted; sweat broke out on my skin, and then with a shattering crash the stone wall gave way, the iron ring was torn out bodily, and I was catapulted into my captors who roared with amazement and came at me en masse. I answered their bellows with one strident yell of bloodthirsty gratification, and heaving up through the melee, began swinging my heavy fists like caulking mallets".

A Howard story always has an abundance of scenes that cry out to be illustrated, so whenever I had to illustrate one I always had difficulty deciding which scenes to leave out. However, "Almuric" is a short novel, and for this Art Folio I had 15 plates to work with so the difficulty was minimal.
